... Targeted ads?
I'm trying out a Chromebook, and Chrome Remote Desktop is one of the native 
apps I've been using (the RDP client's are decent, but no RDP v8 support yet). 
There haven't been any ads. Did you see something in the EULA?
LogMeIn now being not free... that caught me by surprise today. I have used it 
for a long time. They recently reduced the free version to 10 systems, which 
was fine by me.
