Isn't there a SharePoint on Live Office? Might be cheaper or you could set up either the "free" one (in house with some kind of remote access) or the paid one exposed to the Internet is my thinking. More administration required for you if you go with the "free" version. Internet facing would cost more but I think the Live Office one, if there is one, would be cheaper. That’s not actually a bad idea, and one that I might float if a paid for solution is veto’d. I'm not a massive Sharepoint fan either, but it does work as described if set up correctly.
