I set it up a couple of years ago with 2008R2 for our Win7 laptops.

Looking over the docs recently, 2012 R2 is definitely the way to go.

The 2008R2 version requires a working CA for all clients, Win7 and up,
among other things, plus fiddling with more details.

I'm glad I did it when I did it, because of the value it brings, but
it should be much simpler with newer OSes.

OTOH, if I read the docs correctly, if you intend to use Win7 clients
with a 2012R2 infrastructure, you still need a working CA, and Win8
doesn't.
