Gee, I don't want to fix it, I need to use it as a hammer to make them run the
extra drops. :) In pretty much all our offices, the extra cost to run 2 drops
at every station winds up being a total of a few hundred dollars tops.
Essentially we've already sized things to use 2 drops so they have the switch
ports, wiring labor is essentially the same, so the total cost is some extra
wire (maybe, if they happen to use more than one box because of it) plus the
extra connectors. Offices are usually less than 25 people so it's basically a
wash after they have any event that would have been avoided.

Melvin's comments are good ones. I do know that higher-end Cisco and PolyCom
phones don't have those restrictions.
"phone reset" causes loss of network connectivity for the PC - this is because
of a PORT reset on the switch. Make sure the port is specified as a client port
("portfast" on Cisco) so that the port doesn't participate in STP calculations.
At least, this was true in my experience, your mileage may vary.

Yes, it's possible. I don't recommend it however. There are a couple of
common issues they will run into if they piggy back things.
When the phone resets (for any reason) you'll lose network connectivity on the
PC. In some cases we see it actually cause a PC reboot which I've yet to
understand, but it can be reproduced.
On some (most?) phone sets, the network port is 100MB instead of GB, so you may
end up restricting network throughput by doing this. Some phones have GB
ports, normally the higher end ones, and that will obviously be equipment
specific, but it's something to watch for.

Subject: [NTSysADM] vlan on single port
Hi all
i have a client that is setting up a new office with voip and naturally I'm
recomending seperate drops and a seperate switch (small office < 30 users)
,however , as most clients, they dont want spend anymore money than they have
to, so they want to piggy back the computers to the phones ethernet port . Is
it possible to vlan off the same drop/port ?
