The VOIP phone on my desk is set up exactly that way, but I can't tell you
how or why that works.

One really odd thing I've seen is that when I first plug a machine's
Ethernet cable into the phone, certain connections fail (based on routes,
FW rules, I'm not sure). Rebooting the phone solves that issue.
