MediaMonkey but I also looked at Audacity.  What made the choice for me was 
MediaMonkey could be installed in a portable configuration which Audacity would 
not allow.

I can play them in the car!  Some of them were a real bear to get ripped.  The 
worse ones were the ones from CDs created from original recordings dating back

        Have you ever tried CUERipper? I am using it since a year, and while it 
seems too spartan at first and focused mainly on the quality of the rip more 
than its speed, it’s a very nice app. I save my ripped tracks as FLAC, but
