Besides the point? He wanted to see a list of updates being installed. How is my suggestion "beside" the point? I didn't know off the top of my head how to get the icon back, but I offered how to get the list at least.

I understand what Leif is saying, it's one of the most irritating things about Windows Update to me. Used to be, that when you had an update available, the icon would show in the taskbar, and stay there until you did something with it. Now, it sometimes shows when an update is being downloaded, and then disappears. Extremely annoying, imo. The other day I needed it and started it up again. Now, when I want to turn it off, it is showing me that there are pending updates that will be installed when I click on "Shut off".
