Snippet from a support case I had opened with them for my one and only attempt at deploying SEP at one of our clients:
" Our product - Symantec Endpoint Protection - alone requires a server with 2GB of memory to run the following software as part of an embedded database install of SEPM: The Server OS, SEPM Manager Console, Sybase Embedded Database. Additional software would require more memory. If BackupExec was previously installed, this would have put an even greater load on the server." After that I told them to close the case and informed them that we will be migrating all our clients using Symantec products to something else as soon as their current contracts expire. The previous versions were pigs - this thing is friggin' herd of elephants. About half of our clients are still on Symantec and all of them will be done with it by mid-year. How that company keeps making the so called 'best of breed' lists is beyond me... Its nice to know that some things never change... Which is depressing, since Im stil slated to have to install it myself. Here's a bit of a posting from a local Boston-area UG withing the past 24 hours: Subject: [...] TechTips: Anyone been using Symantec EndPoint Protection? Msg Body: I have been a bit so far... What a POS... So far, it has taken down a DC, installed some firewall called "Network Threat Protection" (even when you don't want it to), and magically overwritten its own policies (which are managed from a centralized server). My favorite feature of the "Network Threat Prevention" is that it seemingly cuts off access to those pesky network shares. Oyyy. Follup up from OP: Oyyyy..... Amazingly, the product deployed OK in my test environment... Ugh... Reply: Oyyy is right, didn't you see my rant last week on Endpoint? :-P Replier's post from previous week: We had deployed Endpoint to a couple of our customers, then a week later we were back to remove it. It is a huge pig. It slowed down the servers and the network. It downloaded many GB of "Updates" to the C: drive which filled the HDD in a couple days. (even though it was installed on a different drive. There are some docs on how to tell it to move some of the updates to a different drive, but it doesn't do all of it). We rolled these customers back to SAV Corp 10.2. After doing some research on the web, we found this was a common complaint.
