In terms of the update mechanism for PCs in work groups (we have 50 or
so at various locations), Vipre support instructs that the local
admin, password, and machine name be specified in a central console. I
don't recall doing this when I had SAV, and it's a pain. I did that -
still no updates. Support told me you need to be able to map a drive to
\\pcname\c$ ( file://\pcname$ ), which internally is fine with
credentials, but via VPN or just remote user at locations we don't
manage, I don't see how this would work. Is this working for you other
Vipre users with stand alone PCs at remote locations? I must be missing
something.

I use managed Forticlient A/V suite for most of our laptops, and I
know I don't have to configure any of this. For Forticlient, the agent
just communicates via port 80/443 to the FortiManager appliance, and the
upgrades run without issue. These are all remote PCs at sites we don't
manage. I'm about to just put Forticlient on these other PCs and be
done with it and just use Vipre for LAN/WAN sites.

As for the Virus we reported to GFI support, no word from GFI, but our
offices were closed for part of the day on Friday and we'll follow-up on
Monday.

That's enabled. Still not working.

I'm on hold with Sunbelt and will update the list with what happens,
should you vipre folks have interest.

Go to the properties of the policy where your clients are and then
check Updates. There is a check box for "Download via the internet if
local updates are unavailable".

What sunbelt servers? I can't seem to find any reference to what

By the way, Vipre folks, we have found two viruses here that Vipre does
not even detect. We reported it to support yesterday, and were told
there was no resolution (after 24 hours of waiting), and to run
Malwarebytes. We re-image anyway, but that's a crappy answer. "Our
product doesn't work so go use this free tool".

The remote pc has to go directly to sunbelt’s servers for its updates.
I’ve asked about having it go to the main server instead of back out to
the internet, but Vipre cannot do this (yet).

Do you point that remote PC to your internal main console server, or
something like updates.sunbeltsoftware.com?

We have remote sites w/ no “server” – just a designated PC that acts as
the local update server for that office.

If you have remote sites with no server, what do you point to as your
update server? internal or a GFI server?

Well that's not too bad. I upgraded about 500 PC's and 80 servers via
the console from version 3 to version 5 without much issue at all. I
tested a few machines first and then a few days later upgraded about
5-10 machines at a time. I also use a full SQL DB not express nor Vipres
DB.

900 or so.

How many PC's are you or did you upgrade?

I'm sure I will end up calling them. It's always the same: they look at
my config, it's correct, yet we have too many PCs that either fail to
upgrade or don't fully upgrade, leaving the PCs in an unprotected state.

It's not PC-specific, just an issue I've seen on recent Vipre
upgrades.

Part of it might be the smaller MSI, but that's an issue where you have
your console server at HQ and your remote PCs are at remote locations. I
wish there were a mechanism where I could run and install *with* current
updates from a USB, for example.

I really like Vipre but major rev upgrades are a pain.

>>> Kim Longenbaugh <[email protected]> 12/14/2011 9:28 AM >>>

Vipre has the tools to do agent installs, either from a fresh start or
for upgrades. If it’s not working right, why not call their support as
soon as the problem occurs. Our experience has been that their support
bends over backwards to resolve the issues.
Another way to look at it is, if the same PCs that had a problem with a
previous upgrade had it again, maybe it’s not Vipre, maybe it’s a
problem with the PCs

Yes, and I might be calling. I think these are PCs that had a problem
with the upgrade from 4 to 5. I see it every time: agent uninstalls as
part of the update, but for some reason a small percentage never finish.
Hence I dread major Vipre releases.

I have a script that I push via GPO to force an install, so I better
get that updated.

Thanks and at least it's just me.

>>> Sean Rector <[email protected]> 12/13/2011 4:03 PM >>>

I’m on that version and having no problems whatsoever, including with
workstations getting updated to it.
Do you have a call in to GFI’s support line?

Hi Folks,

For you Vipre users, any of you having issues over the last few days
with Vipre not catching viruses? We've had at least a dozen PCs we had
to re-image over the last week. The vipre console indicates the agent is
shut down, and it won't start.

This wasn't a problem for us until we went to agent 5.0.4464, and as
usual, a bunch of PC were left without protection because the install
removed the old product, never installed the new product. Just wondering
if this version is problematic.
