P.S.: It's worth mentioning that there's a performance hit for enabling PAE, since it adds a third layer of indirection to the page tables. Similar performance penalties apply to a natively 64-bit OS. So going PAE or 64-bit just to regain (say) 0.4 GiB of RAM probably is a bad idea anyway.
