WDS needs AD as far as I know (interaction with dhcp etc is all stored in AD).
That doesnt mean the machines it builds *have to be joined*.

Please don’t hear me saying that I’m doubting WDS and/or you, ‘cause I’m not.
Just trying to think this through, so when mgmt asks I’ve answered the
questions I’m going to get beforehand.

Can WDS work in a non-domain environment?

These laptops are being imaged to stand alone appliances and I’m looking a
server based solution and/or ripping images to bootable DVDs.

I can’t make guarantees, of course, but I don’t see that Acronis buys you
anything over ImageX, except perhaps that you already know the software.

The driver library is pretty cool, but adding $10-20 per image to my system
cost seems like a lot, when I’ve got thousands of systems, and I don’t know
what the value is (that is, how many drivers I won’t already have on the
Windows image). Using WDS, it’s trivial to add new drivers to an image.

Just suggesting an option. :)

MBS,

I would love to use WDS, however, I don’t think it’s a viable option b\c I’ll
be staging laptops that I won’t be able to see until the time of staging. The
customer can’t provide an inventory list, so I feel I must cover all possible
scenarios via 3rd party apps mention in my OP.

Do you agree?

OK, here we go…

Need to lay down an image on 3,000 customer laptops that will be used as
“single purpose appliances”, however, the only thing they have in common, there
all Dell. My first thoughts are Acronis + UIU, however, I wanted to solicit
some feedback from my favorite collective.
