My bad, I went and read the FAQ (which I just copy/pasted below bc I am inherently lazy...I mean efficient<G>) when I had the same experience with old messages after installation, what I found in the UI now that I retrace my steps was the synchronize choice on the menu, I chose that and went to lunch and everything seemed to be there when I got back. Sorry to mislead you.
