I did the former. DNS complained when I tried to build the first time
and I assumed it didn't create it but it had. Thanks much

You'll either need to make the DNS entry as a host in your local
domain's zone - that is, foreignmachine.yourcompany.com - or create a
new zone, perhaps myoutsideipaddresses.com and then create the A
record there. In the latter case, you'll then need to put a link to
foreignmachine.myoutsidipaddresses.com on a web page or something like
that.
