Exactly, Im not touting for or against any particular virtualization, and
it's always a case by case basis. I was just contracted to do a 4:1 vmware
conversion onto a quad quad core, I get through the whole migration process
and the guy today asks me where he puts this parallel port dongle that he
needs to run some antiquated software app ;)

Ahhh, whoops ;) Luckily the company just came out with a software key a few
weeks ago, but its stuff like that where someone really needs to pay
attention to details.

Since Ive moved most of my clients onto wan backups in some form or another
into the co-lo I have been virtualizing where I can. Im not sure of VZ
overhead but esx stands at 2-4% so you would think you could virtualize
anything successfully, its just like you said, whether it's a valid savings,
and is something the client can take advantage of (hw cost, backups, DR,
etc).

Thanks Ben,

I have yet to formulize a specific mindset as to what will be
virtualized and what wont be, Exchange, High end SQL etc. Most of the
people using VZ, virtualize about everything provided they have a
powerful enough box. Still others choose to keep SQL and Exchange
dedicated and virtualize everything else. It really is a case by case
and comes down to whether we want to support another Virtual software.
The struggle comes down to what is best for my company as well as the
needs of the client and are ability to support them. Right now I am
just playing with VZ in my offtime to decide if its something I need to
create some training docs on and start getting my team members up to
speed on it.
But I can say most of the big hosting companies are on it 100%. They
have the lock on that market so the validation of the software is no
longer an issue.

Greg, don't forget you can goto esxi which is very nice and uhm, free.

Management tools are a little sticky on it, but you can do the same
basic
suspend/copy or get the vcb from vmware.

One of the primary reasons to load vm is to create flexibility
(different
o/s) I would think in a sm/med company.
