We just took the plunge to gigabit this past month, and chose a
refurbished HP Procurve 2824 24-port fully managed switch on Ebay for
about $650. I was a little concerned about the refurbished state with
regards to warranty, so I contacted HP and they confirmed for me that
regardless, it is still covered by the lifetime warranty.
We've been a shop that runs Procurves for quite a few years, so thats
why I went that route. No complaints whatsoever, and we're likely
going to get another one of these fine switches via that route.
(it is rack mountable too btw)

I'm looking for a simple, reliable, fairly inexpensive gigabit
ethernet switch. Rack mountable, with 24 ports. The only feature I
need is to be able to monitor traffic through each port.
