Thanks for the update! Swhen its broken, take it apart and reassemble,
you just never know what silly thing it might be. In my very early computer
years I had a PC that wouldnt boot at alno POST, nothing. (Win 3.1
days). Open case, re-seat the video car poof, fixed. My thoughtsWTF?
I didt touch the thing

I'm good. Server is back now. Turns out the teeny-tiny button for the power
on/off was jammed. I must have jostled it when I took it out of the rack and
removed the cover.

All suggestions most appreciated.

Pull the PS and check for voltage, if you have voltage on all of the designated
pins (m sure thers a diagram online or even on the PS itself) then
youve probably got a bad MoBo (since it wot POST)

Thanks for all of your suggestions. My only other 1850 is a DC so I'm hesitant
to take that off-line for too long, but I might just have to.

Only the fans come on when the cords are plugged in. So I can't run diags or
use OM - my first thoughts too.

I'll start by removing/adding back the parts.

We're mainly Dell's here, and we've never bought any warranty. We just
buy a matching server that is sitting cold for spare parts. We also buy
our drives and memory separately and keeps extras of those around.

The cost of a bare bones spare server is a lot cheaper over 4+ years
than Dell's warranty and the bonus is that I don't have to waste my time
on the phone with Dell support.

My approach with this is always to say I replaced the <x> out of spare
parts inventory because it was in a mission critical device.

I'll call your dead power supply and raise you one dead PERC 2 , had to
call Dell Support ( we had extended warranty at the time ) as the PERC 2
card was bad, and displayed an error upon POST. It was in a domain
controller with mirrored drives, so it was the only controller. The
Dell Tech Support nog said we couldn't go any farther with getting the
card replaced without me booting from DOS and telling him what Fdisk
showed for partitions !!! ( he said he was trying to help us, as if
they shipped a new PERC and the old was still good we'd be charged ---
argh ! )

So I rebooted for the beep, waited 30 seconds, and told him Fdisk
wouldn't see the drives because the PERC was bad ... He just didn't
make the connection on his own ...

All this talk of diagnostic CDs and management packages reminds me of a
time I called into Dell with a PC with a dead power supply. The
technician asked me what version of Windows it was running.
