AFAIK there is no record delete functionality at that point.

The best option is probably configuring the DHCP server to update DNS on behalf 
of the client.

What apps are you worried about breaking?

  Does configuring Windows to explicitly release the DHCP lease on
shutdown help any?  Maybe that might give MS-DHCP/DNS the clue to
delete the stale PTR...?
