:-) Wasn't my choice.
I have showed them clearly it was the antivirus causing memory problems. Even some users with 2G are getting into trouble. They want to look at a newer version. Will have to wait and see I guess, but we're linked to McAfee ePO, Antivirus, Firewall, Safeboot. McAfee of course. Don't do that. I don't see XP machines with 512MB go thrashing due to AV alone when a decent AV is used. Had installed a D600 with 512 MB for a traveler. After putting McAfee antivirus on there it was unusable, thrashing. (IE6 isn't modern; Chrome, Opera and Safari aren't widely used) It's not hard to get FF 3 up to 250 or 300MB. It's better than FF 1, 1.5 and 2 though. I don't need 3GB in my machine just to run without swapping anymore - 1GB for FF < 3, 1GB for Thunderbird 1.x and 2.x, 1GB for everything else! IMO 512MB on an XP box & modern web browser is borderline unusable, especially when you consider that most anti-malware packages are resource pigs.
