True. However, the OP was specifically asking about proximity cards. :-)
I've seen RSA dongles before that are used for secure logins where you have
to enter a multi-character number that changes every 30 seconds or so....
very nice. :-) Still... I'm a paranoid SOB and I don't like the idea of just
handing someone a "smart card" and letting them use that for login w/o any
other validation. :-) Just my personal opinion for whatever it's worth. :-)

There are cards that can do multiple things.

We have cards that are
a) proximity for some building access
b) smart cards (not proximity based) for computer access (requires a pin)
c) biometric for some locations within the building. They have the
capability to use bio for computers, but we haven't implemented that
part
d) certificate storage (encryption and 802.1x)
e) single sign on (but it was so problematic we didn't implement)

Our cards and software are from RSA. RSA is no longer manufacturing
and selling cards.

for logins. Perhaps coupled with some sort of biometric reader to
authenticate that the person with the card is the actual user, but not
alone. I've worked for a company which used the cards for physical access to
the building, and those cards can be problematic -- if they get cracked or
too close to a strong magnetic field, they are dead.

software. Software advice would greatly be appreciated.
