We always watched the physical failure rates on the tapes. When a tape
started to get a few, we retired it out of production. Don't forget you also
have age issues to deal with along with the number of writes and the types of
writes. 

We are also glad that we went to disk based backups about a year ago and we
have never looked back or been happier.
