no Jon that is not the case; with the drives in place as was before the 
problems, we showed two distinct drives and partitions on the controller and in 
the operating system. this seems to be a failure somewhere else and i am really 
looking at the controller itself now, logically this seems to the problem. i 
have moved the drive ID around to several other settings like ID 3 and still 
get medium errors to the original drive that i know is good!
Very perplexing...
