They teamed up with Radio Shack and mailbombed the country with them. It was basically a commodity barcode scanner chipset, tweaked to inject special characters to make it unsuitable for use without their special software. But then people discovered you only needed to solder a wire across two pins to bypass that. They started sueing people who did it. Which led to a counter-suit for mail fraud, since they mailed them for unsolicited and free using USPS, which makes it legally the property of the recipient. The company folded soon after.
