  They teamed up with Radio Shack and mailbombed the country with them.

  It was basically a commodity barcode scanner chipset, tweaked to
inject special characters to make it unsuitable for use without their
special software.  But then people discovered you only needed to
solder a wire across two pins to bypass that.  They started sueing
people who did it.  Which led to a counter-suit for mail fraud, since
they mailed them for unsolicited and free using USPS, which makes it
legally the property of the recipient.  The company folded soon after.

  Note to self: Make sure your business plan is legal before investing
millions in product and mailings.
