That seems very wrong to me. AFAIK, Ubuntu Workstation and Server
are the same distribution, just with a different set of default
packages.
If you boot the Ubuntu Workstation system, open up a command prompt, and type
ifconfig -a
do you see both network interfaces?
As far as distro choice goes: If you find Ubuntu Server distasteful,
I would recommend steering clear of the BSD's. You'd be in for some
big culture shock. :-) Debian has gotten better in that department.
CentOS/RHEL are better still, with lots of GUI and features to help
those used to the Microsoft Way. But Ubuntu's the best for recent
arrivals from the land of Microsoft, in my experience. I'm near
positive it can be made to do what you want with minimal effort.
