Just built a new machine.
I think it was a combo of changes user permissions and windows updates on
the same day.

I had that problem once myself. Taking the machine out of the domain and
adding it back seemed to take care of the problem. Also, the UPH Cleanup
tool helped. Ultimately, what fixed it was replacing the machine. There did
not appear to be any malware or virus or anything like that on the machine.
It probably just needed a clean copy of Windows.
The machine I had problems with was Windows XP SP2.

Do you have a desktop group that runs routine/automated maintenance
tasks?
I've had something similar happen before when a quarterly cleanup script
got inadvertently run on some staff machines in addition to student.

I think I am going to cut my loses. 10 machines out of 450.
All 10 are up from replacement this month anyways. I think they just

I think the original post mentioned they were disabled....looks pretty
bad
I once had a WSUS GPO go all funky on me and for some reason the
computers went "running home to mama" and immediately started
downloading and installing all sorts of stuff from Windows Update.
long shot but might be worth checking the Auto Updates settings in the
registry.
