Thanks. I think since we're already going to have to put a physical machine
at the D/R site to run the tape library, we'll probably just make it a DC
and let it loaf. Since the network at the D/R site is on a completely
different IP schema I might make it run DHCP instead of letting the wireless
router / access point handle that. J

A cloned VM of an existing DC wouldn't be running all the time unless you
destroy the original and bring up the clone in its place. I don't see where
this helps you. Your idea of taking a second server at the remote site and
making it a DC sounds better to me.

If you wanted to run Hyper-V or Virtual Server 2005 on the remote server and
put a virtual DC on there that might me an option to consider for security,
role separation, etc. I would stay away from ESXi for something like this
if you've no experience administering it. And whatever you do, stay away
from VMWare Server. Virtual PC 2007 is faster in my experience.

I guess we don't necessarily need to P2V, we could just create a virtual
server from scratch. That being said, if I take one that already exists and
P2V it, I wouldn't have to add it to the domain and all that stuff, would I?

The main reason I'm thinking of doing this is for D/R purposes. Or, I guess
I could just buy a small server and add it as a DC from scratch and not
worry about P2V. J That might even be easier/simpler.

Does this DC have any other roles? (File server or whatever.) I'm getting
at the question of why do P2V at all? Simply standing up a new DC in VM
land might be a better idea depending on the circumstances.

I think you also need to think about why you want to go this route.
Creating a new VM environment for one VM doesn't make a lot of sense to me,
but I could be missing part of the equation.

I'm thinking of trying to do a P2V on one of our DCs for D/R purposes. If I
get the "cheap" version of VMWare, can I do that, or do I need to get the
"enterprise" class of VMWare. Any other virtualization software that would
work (well) and not be super-expensive to P2V our Win2K3 DC?
