So I can have a front end a backend exchange all in one box

Hyper-V is "free". :-)

R2 performs significantly better than Hyper-V 1.0.

If you will have access to Microsoft Downloads, then use either Hyper-V or 
Hyper-V R2.  For that you can use almost any decent powered machine.  The more 
ram the better.
