I have the event log in 2008 email me on certain error conditions of scheduled 
tasks, it is a little tricky to setup but once you have it setup it just works. 
 I set it up over 2 years ago and have not touched it since.

  Aren't you supposed to be able to use Task Scheduler to trigger an action in 
response to any possible Event Log message on Vista/2008?
Does the backup thingy log to the Event Log?  If so, you could do something 
there.

  Me, I'd prolly use a batch file and blat, but I thought I'd mention it as an 
idea.
