Here's a few examples for the Elite and Acronis Backup & Restore. The first is
a PC backed up over the LAN. The second is a server backed up over the LAN and
then the same server, which is also connected to the Elite via iSCSI.

WinXP Pro
100 MB Ethernet (over LAN)
Backup Hard Drive (13.2 GB)
Backup Time: 25:20

Windows 2003 SP2 server
Gigabit Ethernet (over LAN)
Backup C Drive (12.0 GB of data)
Backup Time: 6:20

Windows 2003 SP2 server
  Gigabit Ethernet (over iSCSI)
Backup C Drive (12.0 GB of data)
  Backup Time: 5:20

How well and fast is drobo with acronis true image backup? What version of
acronis did you use?

I haven't seen that behavior with other iSCSI storage (iStor, StoneFly, EMC),
so I'm inclined to believe that it's a Drobo issue, not a Microsoft one.

So far, I've had good luck. I've got a 6 TB Drobo S on our video surveillance
system and as I mentioned, a Drobo Elite.

The Elite took me a while to figure out because I'd never worked with iSCSI
before. I have it attached to about 4 Win2003 servers via a 2nd Gig NIC in each
attached to an HP Gig switch.

So far, it's been performing well. Things I particularly like about it...

* No trays or carriers, just shove the drive in.
* While it's available for use to the servers it's attached to, I also share it
out as a target for Acronis images.
* I currently have (7) 2 TB WD2002FYPS drives in it but it's no big deal to
plug anything in. I've mixed some drives in it prior to putting it into service

* I had to replace one of the 2 TB drives and the system rebuilt without any
interruption to availability (though it did run slower).
* I'm currently using dual drive redundancy so if one drive fails, the array is
still protected from a 2nd drive failure.
* I haven't tried this but you can put drives back in any order and the system
will work correctly.
Things I don't like...

* Reboots and volume mounting can be pretty slow.
* Administrative utility doesn't see Drobo for a couple of minutes after system
reboots. I don't know if this is the Drobo or the MS iSCSI components causing
the delay.

Speaking of Drobo (in the storage thread), who all here has used one? I saw the
product when it first came out and the idea seemed REALLY cool, but I could
never shake the nagging feeling that something just wasn’t right about it
compared to traditional RAID setup, so I’ve stayed away.

Unwarranted FUD, on my part?
