Let's see....

First, I wrote this blog post against Exchange Server 2007 sp1 -- it applies
equally to Exchange 2010.

<http://theessentialexchange.com/blogs/michael/archive/2008/03/29/exchange-server-2007-and-domain-controllers-a-summary.aspx>

You'll have to run adprep32 on the 2003 server. Adprep is x64 only. Then again,
once the 2008 R2 server is a member of the domain, there is no reason to
execute the prep process on the 2003 server.

Don't seize the roles, do a orderly FSMO transfer.

You'll have 7 days to do the migration before the SBS 2003 server starts
shutting down every hour.

There are lots of pieces and parts to this process. You might also find this a
worthwhile read:

Subject: Migrating from SBS 2003 to Server 2008 Standard

Hi All,

I wanted to run the high points of a migration plan past everyone.

I'm migrating from SBS 2003 to WIndows Server 2008 Standard Edition R2 on new
hardware. Both machines are functional.

- Take a full image of the existing SBS 2003 server before beginning and test it
- Install 2008 on new hardware
- Run ADPREP and ForestPrep etc on the 2003 server from the 2008 media
- Join the 2008 server to the existing domain and wait for everything to
propagate
- Seize all the roles
- Install Exchange 2010 on the 2008 server
- Migrate exchange
- Move all other minor things such as files, printers etc.

See any big problems?

Shawn
