This is the direction we are going to be taking... we are going to front
end our EqualLogic boxes with Win2K8R2 file servers (also to do several
things a vanilla CIFS/NAS head won't).

We are considering multiple smaller LUNs aggregated in to a DFS
namespace... this way we can move/add/resize LUN's as needed and move
data around as we are abstracting the namespace presentation to the end
user community.

We are also using it as an opportunity to re-think the way we have user
home and group directories structured and mapped today...

You definitely want the 5x2T option. Going with a huge 1x10T LUN is
asking for trouble one day. The easiest example is if you ever have to
chkdsk one of those LUNs. Running chkdsk on a 10T volume is going to
take FOREVER and you will be completely offline for that period of time.

I'd concur with Martin's advice that you a) shouldn't thin provision
unless you have the monitoring and trending capabilities to manage it
and b) you want a vendor that lets you adjust LUN sizes on the fly.

Thanks,

Brian Desmond

As per my other thread I'm looking at SAN vendors. Our main file server
has around 8tb on it right now, spread across multiple "thick" LUNs of
around 2tb each.

Assuming we're going to be running Windows 2008 R2, what are people's
opinions on provisioning storage to a file server as multiple smaller
LUNs or fewer larger LUNs?

For example if the SAN supports it why would you allocate 5x2tb LUNs
instead of a single 10tb thin LUN?
