In my experience, it's often just the odd few, rather than the whole lot, that get problems with Windows Updates. Even if the machines are all identical.
For all the small offices I "support", turning on AU and re-imaging the odd one is better than exposing them, in my opinion. Some of these "clients" have my details on their systems, and I'd sooner they were patched ASAP. If I had the option, though, WSUS would be installed on-site and I'd wait a few days before releasing.
