+1 for Nagios (and I've heard good stuff about OpsView). Last time I did nagios 
there were issues with timing and VMs - has it gotten better?

If you are familiar with Nagios, check out OpsView. It's Nagios but better. 
Easier interface, awesome plugins (like Nagvis and MRTG built in). Good 
documentation. Free and paid for versions available with support. I'm a total 
convert.

One of the big things that got me was that OpsView didn't require a 4GB+ Ram 
dedicated server. Runs fine in a VM. Thank you Nagios/OpsView!
