My Google-fu isn't seeming to find me exactly what I'm looking for, though I've
got plenty of hits, trying to sift through them isn't getting me where I wish
to be.

Here's what I'm trying to do...

I have a laptop that has no hard drive. I have a 44 pin IDE to Compact Flash
adapter, and a Compact Flash card. This particular CF card is NOT settable as a
Fixed Disk, thus, it is ONLY recognized by the OS as removable media. I'm on a
budget, and this is for a Christmas present for my boys, and I (obviously)
don't have a lot of time. I thought I was getting somewhere with this last
week, but unfortunately no dice and now I'm up against a wall...

I know that XP does not like to boot from removable media, but Linux GRUB, (and
I believe LILO as well) doesn't care. I also know, based on what I've read,
that you can boot XP using GRUB. I am not interested in installing Linux for
them at this time. That will be in a few years when they are older and ready to
delve into OS configuration....

I AM able to boot my laptop and the BIOS will recognize the CF card properly. I
can also boot my install CDs and run the setup process from them, however when
he system reboots, it fails, because XP recognizes that it is on removable
media.

I'd like to go through that process, but once it does, I'd like to boot to an
Ubuntu live CD and overwrite the boot files so that GRUB is the bootloader
instead of XP, and then have GRUB launch XP. I know I could resize the
partition and install Ubuntu as well, but I don't have that much space on my CF
card. I just want GRUB and XP, nothing else.

Can any of you tell me what I need to do? I don't know enough about Linux to do
this on my own right now, and though I am willing to learn, I don't want to
spend 20 hours of trial and error this week trying to get it to work. I'm going
to loose enough sleep Christmas Eve as it is... Those of you with small
children who celebrate the holiday will certainly understand! ;-)

Please feel free to email me off list if you don't feel it appropriate for the
board.
