Yup, grub replaces what's there and copies the existing one so it can be chain 
loaded.

The original mbr that is chain loaded and the various stage 1|2 files for 
reading filesystems like
ext3/xfs etc to read the root partition of the nix based os you would otherwise 
be loading...

You can put the partition after if you desire, you just need to know the syntax 
of the
install cmd, it really is trivial.
