I do have a SATA RAID card in my main desktop at home, so I'm also considering
adding an array to it and transfer all my data from the 5 older (single) disks
in the thing.

Agreed on the single point of failure. Disks are so cheap now anything
other than a laptop gets RAID1 at home. I have RAID1 on my desktop and RAID1
eSATA.

I'm
using offsite backup now (Backblaze). Onsite (tape/DVD/BD) backup solutions
that can handle the amount of data I have (and will have) cost more than I can
afford.

I could wait and restore from backups, but after thinking about it, restoring a
couple TB of stuff over my home internet connection would take quite some time,
not to mention piss off Comcast.

I'm less interested in continuous uptime as I am in being able to eliminate a
single point of failure. Hard disks will eventually fail, and when that
happens, I'd like to be able to recover relatively easily.
