I currently work for a staffing company and we cover the costs of screening. We make the formal offer and agree upon a pay rate prior to the background check and drug screen. I’ve worked as a contractor previously and have never been asked to cover the screening and drug test costs. This sounds a bit shady – especially since they have not negotiated a pay rate with you yet.

I am currently talking to the contracting rep about this position. He wants me to fill out some online forms, standard stuff, but I am concerned about one of the forms. This form is a release for a Background Check and Drug Screening. Now, I don't mind the background check or the drug test. But what kinda irks me is that they want to charge $10 for the Drug Test and $25 for the Background Check. What the form basically says, is, that I am giving the contracting firm to deduct those amounts from my first paycheck. I am also hesitant in filling out any forms for them, as they haven't told me what the payrate is on this position. I thought all Background Checks and Drug Test charges where the responsibility of the contracting company?
