Have you tried logging on to the XP Mode VM with explicit credentials rather than xpmuser? I use it for my admin account while running as a regular user on the host. I haven't messed with this in so long, but I think it's under Settings | Logon Credentials. I also don't use the published apps. I logon to the desktop.
I should mention that my XP Mode VM is a domain member. I keep the few that we have in a special OU so I can patch them with WSUS, yada, yada, yada.
