I agree. The comp being in "public" can be a huge deterrent. We don't let our
kids take the laptop/mini to their room(s).

+1.

I set up parental controls on my teenage nephew's computer but he kept trying
to get around or disable them. All attempts ended when the PC was moved so that
anyone walking into his bedroom would have an immediate view of the monitor...

This + Miscrosoft Security Essentials and the laptop stays inthe family room.
I have found that computers in public areas of the house solves so many
potential issues. More then most of the 'technological' solutions do actually.
So, protect it from malware and then manage user expectations in a way
consistent with their family needs.

OpenDNS + Windows Live Family Safety = a very good combination of free methods.

I highly recommend setting up a free account at OpenDNS. If she wants OpenDNS
to just control the one laptop, you can set that one to use OpenDNS's DNS
servers and her router to use the ISP.

Hi All

a friend of mine has been given an old laptop running windows XP

she want s to get this on line for her kids so i will beef up the RAM and
install a wireless dongle

however she asked about parental controls for web browsing etc. Not having kids
this is something that i have not looked in to

anybody have any advice and or experience of any offerings?

as the laptop is fairly old it will need to be something with minimal system
requirements. also my friend is not too computer savvy so it needs to be simple
to administer

thanks

Laurence
