The first choose was a VM the second would have been a self bootable USB thumb the third choice was the DVD option. I ended up on a DVD to get the work done. I will say one thing at this point the file handling was much better than Window. I had a hard drive in a USB enclosure that was not working at all under windows that Ubuntu allowed me to at least get all but one file. One partition was failed even under linux, but the three with data partitions at least readable for the most part under Linux but not under Windows I was able to recover most of the data.
