That is one of the reasons I want to put it on a bootable USB was to see if I could use it to recover files from machines with bad hard drives without having to pull the drive and mount it in or to a known good machine. From what I saw last night Linux was able to read the drive (USB mounted) and allowed me to copy the files to another USB drive even though the Windows machine said the drive was dead (most likely it should be shot but hey the machine has been turned off for about 3 years now and the drive was maybe 5 years old when I turned off the machine). Promise controllers of that time period sometimes did funny things to the drives and I remember and did find Promise folders in all three of the drives with data. Two were in with the drivers for the machine one was in a folder by itself. I did not look too much at the contents of those folders as they were not data I wanted to get back.
