It sounds flippant but ask them or read your contract. That will be definitive
vs. "a bunch of folks on a list".

Well, I wasn't thinking "responsible" in the legal way, I was more wondering
who is usually supposed to handle installing anti-malware/anti-virus and
installing Windows Updates, that sort of thing.

Depends on a number of things, but it certainly should be defined in the Terms
of Service that you agreed to. What does IT say?

Most ISPs/hosters limit themselves to "reasonable care". That has enough
wiggle-room to get them out of almost anything other than allowing you to
terminate your contract and go elsewhere.

Subject: Security and maintenance on virtual co-lo servers

Our website was attacked and malware posted on it apparently over the weekend.
I'm not sure, but I don't think there is any antivirus / anti-malware on the
virtual server we are renting. Who's responsibility is it *normally* to handle
security and Microsoft updates on a virtual server?
I don't know the terms of our contract, so I can't say whether or not the
hosting company is in violation of those terms or not. Just wondering how these
things normally work.

Thanks!
