It froze and upon reboot gnome was broken. KDE allowed me to use package installer synaptic, it stopped after a while and said the disk was full, but I don't think that it was. PACKAGE MANAGER SAID USE DPKG CONFIGURE A> WHICH I DID AND THEN THE SYSTEM FROZE>

Did you use the 2.4.30 kernel with mediabay hotplug support? Deinstalling and reinstalling should help. Perhaps you should not only deinstall it but purge it (see man-page of apt-get).
