ok I renamed the gcc kernel to miboot .image and made that the only one in the
kernel folder, I also edited yaboot config to reflect 2.4.30 nubis - powermac,
but when I booted the screen still reads2.4.27 qs the choice other than the
installer.

How do I check in the terminal window which kernel it is using?

I moved the new kernel images to the kernels folder of the hfs partition that I
use to boot the ext3 partition,
However when the splash screen loads it still only has the 2.4.27 kernel listed
rather than a choice between this one and the new ones.

Do I need to open the miboot img file and place the kernels into there?

Correct. Also applies to the fake Finder file.

Correct. The System and Finder files may be in a folder of their own,
which may be designated bootable with the hfsutils command hattrib, but
miBoot looks for all files (config, kernel, initrd) in the root by
default. There is room for improvement here.
