I don't know about the 2.6 kernel upgrade.
But on the PDM PowerMacs (6100, 7100, 8100) there is support for the
sound system.
The Performas' sound isn't supported and isn't worth the effort in my
opinion because the sound chip is ancient.
The sound chip in the PowerBooks is very similar to the one in the
PDMs. However the PowerMac sound driver relies on DMA transfers and the
PowerBooks don't have a DMA controller - so a new driver would be
necessary which would be much work and need a lot of time.
One thing I'll probably try to get to work is the sleep support. I've
already made some progress in that direction.

Hello All,
Is there any progress toward a 2.6 kernel, or sound on the nubus macs
and powerbook 1400? What will the benefits be of the kernel upgrade?
Thanks,
Vito

Hi Vito,
if the W28E will fit might depend on the type of drive you currently
have. It might even be impossible if the connector adaptor of your
drive doesn't fit with standard slim-line drives.
I've got the 12x CD-ROM module and the connector adaptor fits with the
W28E. However the W28E has only one of the four mounting screw holes in
the same position as the original drive. But it can nevertheless be
mounted tightly.
I have seen one picture of an connector adaptor board on a website that
is different from the one of my unit and that will not fit with the
W28E.
I assume that the connector adaptor board of the 6x and 8x drives is
different from the one of the 12x units and will therefore not fit with
standard slim-line drives.
I also don't know if one can get into problems with slave or master
preconfigured drives but I've had none so far.

Yes, I edited it but in my haste I did not really edit all of it
properly. I am at times a little too anxious, and not appropriately
patient about the task at hand.
My 1400c is now up and running on your new gcc kernel and the install
seemed to go a bit smoother, But this time I went with the Deb
installer's suggestion about the size of the swap file being limited
to 183 megs, this is a large mistake on my part as I can tell you that
the system really churns away at the hard drive, and is noticably
slower as a result.
Last time I installed, I used a 1.2 gig swap and it seemed alot
smoother in in running apps. So I am in the market for a larger hard
drive. I recently purchased a cd-rw teac w28e for the 1400 as I read
tobias' email that it could be used with the 1400. I'm wondering if it
needs to be modified in some way to fit the 1400c?
Many Thx - once again,
Vito

ok I renamed the gcc kernel to miboot .image and made that the only
one in the kernel folder, I also edited yaboot config to reflect
2.4.30 nubis - powermac, but when I booted the screen still
reads2.4.27 qs the choice other than the installer.
That's strange. Do you really edited the right yaboot.conf?
It should read something like this:
image = miboot.image-2.4.30-PB_MB1_GCC3
label = Linux 2.4.30
video = nbpmacfb
root = <your root partition, e.g. /dev/hda8>
append = "keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes=1"
