Hi Tobias

I also tested the MachKernel-2.4.30-PB_MB1_GCC3_DI; it booted into the Sarge installer without any problems and without any special kernel arguments needed. It seems that you need to replace "root=/dev/ram" in with "rootdev=/ dev/ram".

Well, i just mistyped the mail: it had been testet 'rootdev' as above. After kernel panik I just switched off my powermac and typed the last mail "blind". These are the testet arguments:

rootdev=/dev/ram
mach_options= ramdisk=16384 keyboard_sends_linux_keycodes=1devfs=mount

Because of error message "couldn't mount..." i guess the kernel or the booter (?) is propably ignoring "devfs=mount" and should be enabled while configuring/building. (Florian mentioned the kernel to be compiled but not enabled with devfs)

The exact errors are:

invalid compressed format (err=1)
[...]
mount_devfs(): unable to mount devfs, err: -20

I googled a little bit and the only things i found has to to do with a) bad ram and b) problems with the format of the ramdisk (while buildingthe kernel).

a) I tested tree pairs of ram - no big differences, sometimes I got this message (mostly after not reseting the PRAM of my Powermac 6100):

attempt to access beyond end of device
01:00: rw=0, want 715827883, limit 16384

b) for me this last error message looks more like problems with the ramdisk itself since the limiting (my bootoption for the ramdisk) seems not to be the problem but an incredible size for the ramdisk the kernel wants to load. Seems like a broken or damaged init-ramdisk.

BTW: The miboot freeze as usual at the same state short lines after booting.

Claus.
