Very fast... worked for me but on a powermac 9600/200MP with Sarge
Instructions for Sarge
Get bootx from penguinppc.org
Get debian install cd or dvd
put bootx extension into the extensions folder
create a folder named Linex Kernels in the System Folder
For 2.4 kernel
navigate to "Yourdebiancd"/install/powerpc/2.4
copy vmlinux to the Linux Kernels folder you created (You can rename
it vmlinux-2.4.27 to help distinguish from other kernels)
copy initrd.gz to your system folder ( you can also rename it
initrd-2.4.27-install.gz for the same reason)
Reboot your machine
once the bootx dialog appears hit "tab" key to stop it from auto booting
select your kernel
hit the options button, click on use specific ramdisk, and find your
initrd.gz file
click ok
on the main menu you can do save to prefs
insert any special kernel arguments that are necessary for your
machine to the more kernel arguments
click linux and it should boot.
Install debian base
one of the last steps of the installation is to install quik. choose
no, or procced without bootloader.
note the boot device (something like /dev/sda6)
reboot
once you get back to the bootx menu
hit tab again to stop it from auto booting
hit options and de-select "Use specific ramdisk" then ok
on the main menu root device /dev/ enter your boot device that was
provided by the debian installer but withou the /dev/
hit save to prefs
hit linux
you should now boot to finish the instalation
For 2.6 kernel it's a little bit harder
The procedure is all the same except
The vmlinux file is located in "Your Debian CD"/install/powerpc
(note: vmlinux not vmlinuz)(you can rename it vmlinux-2.6.8
The initrd.gz is in the same folder as above (you can rename it also
to initrd-2.6.8-install.gz
install folowing these instructions http://lists.debian.org/debian-
boot/2004/09/msg01709.html
good luck

What do you mean when you say that it doesn't fit? According to
your posts
to debian mailing lists that I just found, your hard disk is 8GB,
which should be plenty for a full Linux install. There should be no
problem with plain PowerPC kernels, as long as you use your chosen
bootloader (BootX, miBoot, quik) properly. Unfortunately, it's not
at all
obvious how to do that with recent kernels; however, it's very
easy once
you know how. NuBus kernels will NOT work on that machine. Which
distribution would you prefer to install? Debian? Ubuntu? Gentoo?
OpenSUSE? YellowDog? Slackintosh? ArchLinux? CRUX? All of those are
possible, with varying amounts of work and usefulness. I would be
glad to
walk you through an installation of your choice. I'm a bit biased
toward
the miBoot method of booting OldWorld models such as yours, which
takes a
bit more work to set up, but it's probably the most trouble-free
solution
currently available.
Right, the hard disk is about 8GB. The last time i tried an boot up
with
mklinux. Worked the first boot and worked during the install. But, and
i still dunno why, it didnt boot anymore.
I think debian will be my choice. I heared of a lot of other
distributions like Ubuntu or Gentoo but maybe i'am a bit "Old World".
Let me step into your wrotes. So you say that the nubus kernel does
not
work on this powerpc. So the easiest way here would may be just take
another kernel and use miboot.
Hope you can get me going there :-)
