I believe a Custom Knob can exist anywhere one of the pre-defined knobs can exist, since it derives from the same base class. And, obviously Jonathan is correct about the DAG. I'm thinking though, it might just be possible to draw (or at least define) a knob's thumbnail for yourself. That might give you some very limited on-node drawing functionality.
