Since the bugaboo of the old gcc version is coming up again (and I am
whole-heartedly in the camp that wishes that Nuke updates to a newer
gcc), I recently did some digging into what Autodesk is using to build
Maya since it appears that's what The Foundry is basing their decision on.
As of Maya 2015 (and apparently also earlier to some degree), It turns
out that while Autodesk does still use gcc 4.2.1 to build Maya, they
also use gcc 4.4.6 (as well as Intel Composer 2013 SP1 update 1
14.0.1.106), so it's a combo of compilers that they support. (Side note
- Maya 2015 was built on CentOS 6.2)
It also appears that their intention is to use 4.8.1 in the future -
(reportedly they were looking at moving to Red Hat Developer ToolKit
1.1, and are now looking onto 2.0).
Since Autodesk has been using gcc 4.4.6 (and looks to be newer going on)
to build various components of Maya, does this check off any more of the
requirements to move to newer gcc versions?
Cheers!
