I see. The problem is that the expression expects a format knob, not a format object.
So, linking to a node that physically has a format knob will work, but trying to reference the format attribute that exists for all nodes won't. Hope that makes sense. :S What you're trying to do is probably best handled with a knobChanged callback, though. Checking for inputChange to trigger it every time the input of the group/gizmo changes.
