You could try using Nuke's original CheckerBoard node (instead of CheckerBoard2, which is what the menu item will give you).  Its size (well, width) is specified in pixels instead of a format, so it's a lot easier to work with in gizmos like you're trying to do.

Other > all plugins > CheckerBoard

or nuke.createNode('CheckerBoard')

or X to bring up the TCL command prompt, then type CheckerBoard
